Times have changed and a new demeanour “Fun at Work and Personal Lives” is gaining popularity in our work/personal life balance. That’s the tune of the current decade in our fast-pace and ever changing industrial/commercial society.
My dad, a great philosopher in my opinion, repeated to me over the years that an important problem in our society is that people do not genuinely laugh enough. It seems we need to be conditioned or prompted to laugh, and I don’t mean grin or smile as a courteous gesture. Over the years I viewed many comical skits, movies, TV programs etc., and the audience laughed wholeheartedly (I don’t mean canned laughter either). Yet, when I reproduced the same situations in public in a timely and appropriate manner no one laughed. My observation of this: Is laughter a natural, spontaneous and uncontrolled behaviour, or does laughter need to be organized and scheduled for us to prompt a spontaneous laugh, i.e. need to be reminded when to laugh?
Many of us get up in the morning and get prepared to go work with a mental attitude involving another grinding day of facing various struggles, boredom and ho-hum etc. This dismal attitude simply gets the mental psyche in reverse motion, and by the time we arrive at work, the rest of the workday goes downhill after that. Whose fault? Our own, and there is no one else to blame. By generating a negative attitude we attract negativity like a magnet, and our performance then mirrors this personal attitude. We curse the bad things that occur and there seems to be no end to the spiral effect. Our boss, colleagues and other people we are in contact quickly observe our negative attitude and behaviour and often adopt a more distant, reluctant behaviour and critical response in return. One good look in a mirror and inner reflection should point the guilty party as our very own self. This applies not only at work but throughout our personal life as well.
I am writing this article since I truly believe that it is most important in everyone’s lifetime that good spirit and positive attitude do assist in outweighing the negative issues that we may encounter in our everyday life. A positive attitude does not necessarily resolve all issues, but certainly helps to predispose us in thinking more clearly and objectively in the hope of obtaining more appropriate solutions. Since work and work-related preparedness constitute a major portion of our lives, then I believe the utmost importance for our individual wellbeing, both physically and mentally over the long term, that we develop and maintain an energetic and holistic demeanour throughout our lifetime. In summary, we must create a happy drive and constructive outlook at work and in our personal lives to maintain psychic equilibrium. For starters, why not have Fun at Work and in our Personal Life. The process may be somewhat arduous and requires conscious attention at first, but I believe this becomes natural and spontaneous once the momentum gets in place. Practice does make better. The positive outlook will also reverberate to people we associate with, such family, friends, colleagues and other people we meet and associate with, and may even create the desired reciprocal effect – a win win situation.. The proper mental state may even serve to generate constructive interaction and create worthwhile new friendships.
I embrace this philosophy, and I hope that I will encourage everyone that I associate with to share in these beliefs. I believe that maintaining a positive and appropriate humorous demeanour at all times is also an important stress reliever and improves health.
