For Mathieu’s 14th article, we decided to do something different. Instead of an article written by Mathieu, this article will be written by Lindsay. That’s me ;-) Just a change of pace, and add a new element to the Blog. I guess you could look at me as a “Guest Speaker”.
When thinking about what to write about, I wanted to write something that would inspire, and motivate us all. A kind of “uplifting” article, where I would talk about my passion, that being…. Hockey!!! Hockey. To some, it is just a “game”. To others, it is a passion, a part of their childhood. For me, hockey has always had a special place in my heart.
Growing up on a farm, there was always something going on, and this often meant very little time for “father/son” moments. However, there was something I could always count on, to permit bounding time with my father…..CBC Hockey Night in Canada. Saturday night entertainment at it’s best! Saturday night was our night. We were glued to the TV scarfing down a bag of chips, mom bringing a beer for dad, and a soda for me. It was good times spent together. This was during what I call the “hayday” of hockey. The Edmonton Oilers were beginning their dynasty, Mario Lemieux was just starting his career, and Patrick Roy was winning his first Stanley Cup. Goals were a plenty, and there was no such thing as a “trap” system.
These players quickly became heroes to me, and I wanted to be just like them. Unfortunately, at an early age, I was diagnosed with asthma. Most of my youth was spent in and out of hospitals. Trying to control my asthma seemed to be the biggest problem, and many tests were done, with some that worked better than others. This also meant I could not be on a hockey team, or participate in the majority of school sports. Of course, I was very disappointed in not being able to participate in a sport that I love, but my father had a solution for me.
My father told me, just because I couldn’t play hockey, didn’t mean I couldn’t have a passion for it. So he gave me a journal, sat me in front of the television, and had me write and comment about hockey matches. He then advised me to track statistics, each player’s number, were they scored their goals, and various observations about the game itself. Quickly, I became enthralled with hockey and tracking hockey statistics. I would create my own teams, draft my own players, and simulate games throughout hockey seasons. A passion for hockey was born!
As far as collecting cards, that is something that was born around the same time. A time where there was only one brand of hockey cards… O-Pee-Chee . (Topps for our American friends) A time where hockey packs cost 69 cents. A time where hockey packs came with rock hard pinkish gum. I was convinced it was developed by dentists, to ensure kids went to the dentist office often. A time where you would cherish grabbing the last pack of cards, asking the cashier if you could keep the box, and cutting out the cards from the bottom of the box, then proudly showing your friends, and seeing their faces fill up with jealousy. Ohhhh those were good times!
Collecting cards also allowed bonding time with my friends, and cousins. Trading was very simplified back them, but still negotiations were key. Completing a set meant you might have to part with that double of a Lemieux Rookie Card, or even a Gretzky. It was more about having fun, and getting your hand on that last card you were looking for. The hobby has definitely changed over the years, however the passion has always been. The fire has always burned.
Now, I know that there might be those out there, that hockey is not their passion. That is fine, we each have our own passions, and that is point of this article. Whatever your positive passions are, believe in them. Stick with them. Don’t let anyone tell you that they are silly or serve no utility. It’s our passions that inspire us, motivate us, and ultimately bring us happiness.
Now, this is the time of the year, which all hockey fans enjoy. PLAYOFFS!!!! As a way to celebrate this magical time of the year, Mathieu and I thought that it would be fun to have a little Stanley Cup Playoffs Pool with all our site members. Free to those who want to join and play.
Each round, you post who you think will win each series, and by how many games. You get 1 point for correctly predicting the winner of each series, and another point for correctly predicting how many games each series will be won in. This will continue on, until the Stanley Cup Finals, and at the end, we will see who the big winner is!!! No money involved, just the satisfaction of knowing you are a HOCKEY GOD!!!!
So here are the 1st Round matchups. Post your predictions, choose who is going to win each series, and in how many games. You have until Saturday April 18th at 9:00 AM EST to post your predictions. After that, no future predictions will be accepted.
Here are the matchups for the 1st Round. Once the second round begins, we will update the article, and re-open predictions for that round, and sequential rounds after that.

Of course, to be fair to those, that joined the hockey pool from the beginning, additional point values will be added to them.
